Looks like clearing cache can fix this. Follow instructions here: https://community.zoom.com/t5/Meetings/Zoom-5-17-5-2543-does-not-start-linux-version-on-PC/m-p/166965/highlight/true#M94449 This allowed me to upgrade to the newest version.

Clearing cache, as outlined above, works with the new version! Just tried it, and was able to do the upgrade, log in, and join a meeting using the new version of the software.

A more recent version (5.17.1.1840) seems to work for me. It did hang once, but started fine the second time and has been working fine ever since. Will probably skip this update.

Uninstalling and downgrading to the previous version (5.17.1.1840) seems to have corrected the issue. Will probably skip this update and wait for the next one.
