mac built-in camera ... getting dark?

Mac built-in camera is darkish when I'm sitting in front of camera but not when I move away. When I'm sitting 30" away, background is quite dark .... ominous. When I move away background appears as it appears off-camera ... ... 2020 IMAC .... cannot ...
