Integrating Canvas Zoom LTI with Zoom Rooms "Meeting List"

DavidGrogan

Hi,

We are trying to make the starting of meeting in our Zoom Rooms as simple as possible for our instructors.

They schedule their class Zoom sessions in their Canvas courses using the Zoom LTI tool. When they teach in a room equipped with Zoom Room hardware they have to recall the meeting ID and passcode of their scheduled Zoom meeting in order to get the Zoom Room to join that meeting. Not a huge deal but it does mean it's "one more thing" they have to do before the class starts.

Has anyone thought about or worked on this issue? Ideally the Canvas Zoom tool would feed the Meeting List of the appropriate Zoom Room so that the instructor can just "single click" on their meeting on the Zoom Room console.

Thanks!

David

We would be interested in this functionality too on the Blackboard LMS side as we integrate more Zoom Room appliances into our classrooms.

Perhaps this is an enhancement request for the Zoom Room and LMS LTI integration teams to tackle?

Hi @DavidGrogan !

I've wondered how the official Zoom Room setup would go. At my institution, we just installed PTZ cameras in the back of the room and a room microphone mounted on the ceiling. The PTZ cameras were programmed with 3 initial views: podium, projector screen, and front-of-room. The instructors simply log in to either their downloaded zoom desktop client or via our LMS (Canvas) to start the meeting. One-click and the meeting starts.

The Canvas LMS integration shows the scheduled meetings in the instructor's desktop clients, so it's really a personal preference whether or not they start the meeting from there, within Canvas, or from our institution's web-client zoom site.  We haven't had any such issues with our setup.

Hi David -

Quick question for you, as we are in the same boat.

What cameras and ceiling mic array did you go with? And are you using an Extron or Crestron A/V switcher?

We are about to deploy 3 new classrooms with 1beyond cameras and Shure ceiling mic arrays. We also have a Logitech Rally Plus system we are going to try in a classroom.

We are also kicking around the idea of placing an Neat Bar or Poly X50 or Owl camera in a classroom as well to evaluate and iterate.

How has your configuration been working with personal faculty Zoom accounts vs Zoom Room licenses?

Sincerely,

Eric

Our faculty creates the Zoom meeting in Canvas using the LTI and then "Adds to Google Calendar" once the meeting is created, from Canvas.  Then they toggle over to the event in Google Calendar and invite the calendar resource associated with that Zoom Room.  We have specific Google user ID's and calendars set up for each Zoom Room, and then we "associate" them from the Zoom web portal.   Anything on a Zoom Room's calendar will auto-start and auto-stop from the Zoom Room controller according to the meeting details.  We like this setup, but it does allow for "double booking" by accident.  We have a naming convention for the Rooms like zoomroom16@xxx.org
